Dubwize – Snypa Levi : The Sojourner

FOREIGNDUB/MGM 2009
Some four and a half years since the release of their second album, Reality Chant, Christchurch based Dubwize release their eagerly awaited third album, legendarily-dreaded front man Snypa Levi’s solo offering, Dubwize Presents Snypa Levi: The Sojourner.
David ‘Snypa’ Levi was born in the US and immigrated to NZ way back in 1988, joining the Twelve Tribes of Israel and forming the Vision Africa band. After returning to the US for a few years, he settled in NZ in 1995, recording as Papa Levi, before joining forces with Dubwize in 2001, recording their debut album To The Control Tower. One listen shows why these Rastafari brethren took their time crafting this musical journey through rhythm and rhyme, as the production levels are miles ahead of their previous releases – yet stay true to the Dubwize sound and vibe.

Since early 2005, vocalist David ‘Snypa’ Levi and DJ/producer Gabriel ‘Messenjah’ Calcott – with major contributions from Nava ‘Confucius’ Thomas – have been producing the album, utilizing a solid core of heavyweight session musos. Recorded in studios spread between Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton, The Sojourner boasts a track listing that has been successfully road-tested – a sweaty, satisfied dance floor massive the ultimate judge of the quality of these songs.
Lead single Meet U @ 9 showcased Levi’s fierce dancehall style, while new single Country Living is the stylistic opposite with its roots reggae sensibilities – showcasing Dubwize’s ability to connect with roots/one drop and dancehall fans. What you have here are sixteen tracks of slammin’ dancehall and militant roots reggae, painstakingly mixed by Messenjah and expertly mastered by Ian McAlistair.
Dubwize tour nationally early 2009 to promote their new release ‘ The Sojourner’.

The idea was for a group of artists from the Sydney coastal dub community to come together in the true spirit of music and create an album that bridged the gaps between genres. Whilst on tour with The Versionaries and Budspells in New Zealand, various tracks were tweaked and shaped and thus ‘Coastal Connection’ matured into a full 13 track album.

FOREIGNDUB/MGM 2008

P-Bass Expressway began with a friendship that formed between Paul Bimler (AKA Nava Thomas, AKA Confucius) and Ariel White while they were living in an ashram together in the early 90’s. In 1999 with a common interest: funk. Inspired by classic funk acts of the late sixties through to the mid eighties they began recording their own funk.
P-Bass Expressway played their first gig live on Christchurch’s 98.5 RDU. Shortly after this Kurt Dyer (Solaa) joined the band on percussion. The first public gigs came in the form of a regular once a month Wednesday night at the old Jetset Lounge.

P-Bass Expressway began to look further a field with tours following throughout New Zealand and to Australia. In 2005 a vinyl 12” was released with 3 new tracks and a remix from Sunshine Soundsystem’s Downtown Brown. Distribution for the record and CD were secured in Australia, and P-Bass songs began appearing on playlists around the globe.
From 2004 – 2007 P-Bass Expressway were fortunate to play alongside some on New Zealand’s finest acts, including Shapeshifter, Salmonella Dub, Hollie Smith and Kora, to name a few. Highlights were playing Rippon 2006 and Christchurch’s Unity nights.

Although predominantly instrumental, there have been a number of guest vocalists in the band over the years. These include Christchurch’s Sacha van Beek and Jennine Bailey, with well known MC KPz joining the band as a regular member early 2006. All of these, along with Sydney’s MC Janny, now appear on the brand new P-Bass Expressway album ‘Snag Bag” to be released in Australia November 2008.

The result is a group of funk lovers who love bringing the groove and soul of funk music to the people

The Versionaries are a ragga/dub sound system consisting of ¬¬New Zealand dj/producer Christian Burns and New York toaster/mc Barrington Calia. As their name suggests, it’s all about different versions and coming up with a master rhythm and then dubbing, reforming and remixing each subsequent version into a sonic entity that can stand on its own.

Now Resonating out of Bondi Beach, Australia the two have had extensive collaborations and have performed at many events and festivals within Australia and New Zealand.

In 2008, The Versionaries have collaborated with or remixed artists such as Regal, Solaa, Pitch Black, Ishu & Lotek HiFi . The efforts of their most recent collaboration with the one and only Sweet As Soundsystem, DJ Kina & Rayjah 45, feat Hayden Weke and Ry Lungu on melodica, has resulted in Bhutee Skank, a positively rapturous, bouncy, 7 inch vinyl single that’s guaranteed to “nice up ya dance!”

Bhutee Skank is the first single from their forthcoming LP ‘We Come Again’, featuring their latest Versions, Collaborations and Remixes and will be released in November through ForeignDub/MGM. The Versionaries live dub extravaganza have recently toured New Zealand with DJ Kina, Rayjah45 and Hayden Weke served up “inna one voice”.

The Bird :Reinventions

FOREIGNDUB/MGM 2008

Following the release of the last record, “birdville sessions”, the boys are back with their new record Re-inventions. This album features the same line up of Bobby Singh (Tabla) and Barry Hill (bass), joined by Ben Walsh (drums) and Simon Durrington (keys). The new album Re-inventions, consists of a series of remix collaborations with some of Australia’s top producers and live acts. With a desire to keep evolving and pushing the boundaries of live electronic music, the bird has been able to collaborate on this new record, with other artists such as The Resin Dogs, Hermitude, Kobra kai, Dj Ransom, Ritual, Semper Fi, Spoonbill & Johnny Hooves, Dj Soup just to name a few. The result, a dynamic record with a varying range of tempo’s from Hip Hop to Drum’n'Bass, Dubstep and Electronica.

12 years of live electronic experimentation has seen The Bird migrate in a variety of directions with their albums, normally having consisted of live and improvised arrangemants. However Re-inventions, presents a much more produced sound for the bird, pushing in a different direction from previous recordings. It’s an exciting step in the band’s direction, profiling The Bird’s taste for fresh sounds and a diverse musical range.

Re-inventions has been produced, by sending live Bird tracks to producers and bands alike to be remixed. The concept has been, to fuse recorded live music with dancefloor production, something that The Bird has always wanted to experiment with. And in conjunction, a willingness to showcase some of Australia’s best dance music producers into one record. The result is an amazing blend of dance music, all with a common thread, the sound of The Bird.

Whether live on stage or in the studio, ISHU’s music is guaranteed to evoke emotions, keep heads bopping and get feet moving!

ISHU’s relocation to Melbourne (from hometown Sydney) has brought a whole new inspiration to his productions. With a repertoire of solo instrumentals and collaborations with the cream of Australia’s and UK’s vocalists and musicians, ISHU’s particular brand of Hip Hop, fused with Dub, Reggae, Drum & Bass and Electronica is reaching audiences far and wide to much acclaim.

The release of ISHU’s debut, self titled EP is set for late April 7, 2008, through ForeignDub/MGM. Written and produced in his very own modest studio in North Melbourne, it encompasses seven tracks of expressive hip hop, fused with dub, reggae, drum n bass and electronica. With feature artists such as Lotek (UK; Big Dada), Gina Mitchell (SYD; Astronomy Class LP, Basslines), Dragonfly (MELB; Tall Man Soundsystem, Dragonfly & Julez) and more, the EP as a whole represents ISHU’s life influences. Mastered at Melbourne’s legendary Crystal Mastering, it is the perfect blend of organic and synthetic.

With his “live production” setup, comparable to Mad Professor or DJ Krush, ISHU produces all of the sounds created in the studio, on stage, manipulating them live and spontaneously. Launching the EP in Melbourne, guest vocalists appearing with Ishu on the night will be Lotek, Dragonfly, Pataphysics, Rae Pale’, & 3OB. Supported by urban Monk & 1/6, Pataphysics and DJ Bacon, the night will be an eclectic mix of inspirational hip hop, floor shaking dub, bouncing reggae and all things in-between.

As BEAT Magazine in Melbourne said:
“In Australia we encounter our fair share of natural disasters: floods, droughts, and cyclones alike. But, what if you were told that a tornado of due force is set to tear through our sweeping plains and suburban sanctuaries, leaving a trail not of destruction but of swarms of smiling people bopping their heads and shuffling their feet? Bring it on, you say? Well guys as of March 8 it’s going to be on like Donkey Kong when Sydney-turned-Melbournite, Ishu, drops his debut EP on the dance floor of our local Laundry.”
